Dubious Express continued his promising preparation with an excellent trial performance at Canterbury on May 1, finishing a close second by just 0.43L in Trial 15.
Jumping cleanly from the gates, he travelled comfortably throughout and showed a professional, relaxed racing pattern. In the straight, he changed legs smoothly and produced a sharp turn of foot to take the lead briefly, before finishing off strongly under minimal pressure.
Importantly, this was a controlled effort. Under instructions from trainers Richard and Will Freedman, the jockey did not ask for a full effort over the final 100 metres, allowing him to balance up and complete the trial with plenty left in reserve. The horse that finished ahead of him was fully ridden, making the performance even more encouraging.
It was another step forward for the colt, who has continued to impress with both his temperament and natural ability. He pulled up well post-trial and has taken good benefit from the run.
Dubious Express is expected to trial again mid-May, with his maiden race start targeted for later in the month, all going to plan.
We’re very pleased with where he sits at this stage of his preparation and look forward to seeing him take the next step. We have a small group of owners already enjoying the journey — if you’d like to be part of it, you can view the ownership opportunity here.
